Is a panel beater the same as a mechanic?
No, they aren’t the same thing. Generally speaking, a panel beater works with the external physical parts of your car that need repairs or maintenance. (There are some exceptions and some other things we can work on internally).
On the other hand, a mechanic would deal more with the internal parts – the engine, gearbox, clutch, air systems.
You wouldn’t take your car to a mechanic to fix dents, scratches, a broken bumper, a chipped windscreen. Those are all things that an Auckland panel beater like Mt Roskill Collision Centre can help with.

There are no specific requirements to become a collision repair technician. However, a New Zealand Certificate in Collision Repair may be useful. To become a qualified collision repair technician, you need to complete an apprenticeship and gain one or both of:
- New Zealand Certificate in Collision Repair and Automotive Refinishing (Level 3)
- New Zealand Certificate in Collision Repair – Non-Structural Repair (Level 4).
The other thing to note is that the job title or business description “panel beater” is not always used in some overseas countries. If you are driving in America, for example, and you have an accident, you would search for an autobody repairman or an autobody mechanic.
