The importance of car air conditioning
Air conditioning has come a long way since it was first introduced initially in 1902 – and then installed in cars as of 1939. Those early systems used to fill the entire boot space of a car, until General Motors created the front-mounted air con system in the 1950s.
Early car air con systems used to run on a gas called Freon, but this is no longer used. Vehicle A/C systems are now much more efficient and environmentally friendly.
What is car air conditioning regassing?
The air conditioning system in your car should ideally be regassed every 1-2 years. This process involves removing the old refrigerant gas and oil from the air conditioning system and replacing it with new gas and oil. Regular regassing ensures optimal performance and efficiency of the air conditioning system
We don’t recommend you do this yourself. Bring your vehicle in to the experts at Mt Roskill Collision Centre and we can do it for you if you suspect your air con system hasn’t been checked in a while. We can also include regassing as part of your regular service appointments.

How often should you regas car aircon?
The frequency depends on the age of your vehicle and the climate where you live. Your car loses approximately 10 per cent of the refrigerant every year. Every year, therefore, you will experience less cool air if you don’t have your air con system maintained and regassed regularly.
If you notice that the air blowing from your vents isn’t as cool as it used to be, it may be time to have your air con system regassed. If you have no recollection of ever having your system regassed, then it’s probably time to do so.
We recommend checking your A/C once a year
It’s essential to have your car’s air conditioning system regularly checked and maintained for a couple of very important reasons:
- a clean, well-maintained air conditioning system helps your car run more efficiently, using less fuel
- looking after your vehicle’s air conditioning system helps prevent air con gases from being emitted into the atmosphere
Does air con make your car use more fuel?
If you use your air con properly, it will actually help your car run more efficiently.
This involves having your air con checked and serviced regularly. Like many other parts of your car, a poorly functioning air con system will make your engine work harder than it needs to – increasing your fuel consumption.
Driving with the windows open will create drag or wind resistance, which means your engine has to work harder than it should. While turning on the A/C might add to your fuel use, it’s less than the increased fuel use caused by the aerodynamic drag of open windows. We advise you always use your air con instead of opening windows while driving on the motorway.
Other things you can do to help your air con system work well are using it regularly and having the cabin filters changed regularly.
Our air con machine is eco-friendly as it recycles the gas and minimises the environmental waste that could eventually end up in the atmosphere. We also conduct a standard car service that ensures all elements of your car are in good working order.
Frequently Asked Questions
Your car air conditioning system may need regassing if it’s not cooling the interior as effectively as it used to, or if it’s been more than two years since the last regas. Other signs include a noticeable decrease in air flow or strange noises coming from the aircon system when it’s in use.
If your car’s air conditioning system is leaking, it could be due to a blocked condensate drain, a damaged condenser, or a malfunctioning evaporator. The system collects water as condensation, which should drain out of the vehicle. If this water doesn’t drain properly, it could lead to leaks. It’s important to have this checked and repaired to prevent potential damage to the vehicle’s interior and electrical systems
Using the air conditioning in your car can have a minor impact on the vehicle’s performance. It places an additional load on the engine, which can slightly reduce acceleration and fuel efficiency. However, this impact is usually quite small and is generally outweighed by the comfort provided by the aircon, especially during hot weather
